Diabetes

Can Diabetes Lead to Stroke and Heart Diseases?

Leading a healthy lifestyle is what one should aim for but following that lifestyle just because diabetes insists you to, isn’t a good idea.

Glucose in blood is the main source of your energy which comes from eating food. Diabetes is a chronic condition associated with abnormally high levels of this sugar (glucose) in the blood.

Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas which helps glucose to get absorbed by the body. And hence, it’s absence, insufficient production or an inability to properly use insulin causes high sugar.

Normal blood sugar levels sit between 70 and 99 mg/dL, whereas a person with diabetes will have a fasting blood sugar higher than 126 mg/dL.

Without ongoing, careful management, it can lead to a build-up of sugars in the blood and can hinder the work of our body system. If there is no insulin then the body cells can even starve due to unavailability of glucose and can damage the working of the kidney, eyes, nerves. And in severe cases can eventually increase the risk of dangerous complications, including stroke and heart disease.

But, different kinds of diabetes can occur, and managing the condition depends on the type. Not only being overweight or leading an inactive lifestyle stem all forms of diabetes. In fact, some are present in the genes from childhood.

MAJOR TYPES OF DIABETES:

  • TYPE 1: It is caused by the immune system destroying the cells that make insulin in the pancreas. This causes diabetes by leaving the body without enough insulin to function normally.
  • TYPE 2: It’s the most common type of diabetes, occurring mostly in adults. People with type 2 might be able to prepare insulin but not enough.

MANAGING DIABETES, AN ART OR SCIENCE?

Treatment of diabetes is merely an art, based on the inclusion of a balanced diet put precisely together with regular exercise. It does help in controlling sugar to a great extent as it allows glucose to enter the cells without the need for insulin. It also helps in lowering glucose levels as well as the blood pressure. Exercise increases stamina, fitness and energy levels as well. But, even after following a healthy lifestyle you are not able to maintain sugar levels, medication is also included at times.
